SwimRoots explores how families can grow small-scale fruits and vegetables indoors throughout the year, even in homes without access to outdoor gardening space. The project was inspired by rising food prices, growing interest in sustainability, and the desire for fresher, healthier food at home.

Designed as a modular indoor growing system, SwimRoots focuses on helping households supplement store-bought produce by cultivating a portion of their own fresh food. The project investigates practical ways to integrate plant-growing systems into everyday living environments without requiring extensive space or technical expertise.

A key part of the exploration involved experimenting with aquaponics-based growing methods. Through hands-on testing and prototyping, I studied how water circulation, plant health, and system structure could work together in a compact, user-friendly design. These experiments informed the final system’s modularity, layout, and usability.

SwimRoots combines research, experimentation, and industrial design thinking to imagine a more accessible approach to indoor food production—one that supports sustainability, food awareness, and everyday living.
